Multiplication RELAY Race!
As we begin to learn division, the students are finding out how important it is to know their multiplication facts! In order to prepare them for division, we have spent some of our math block studying math facts by making flash cards and practicing them with a buddy. On Friday, we had a multiplication relay race. Students had to know the facts in order to answer the problem correctly at the end of the relay! They had so much fun and really enjoyed having a physical avenue to share their knowledge of the facts. Check out some pictures below!

Class Representatives!
Last week, we had several students from our class who campaigned to be one of two of our class representatives! All of our students did a fantastic job whether they were campaigning, making a speech or using good judgment on their voting! We would like to congratulate Daniel & Gavin for becoming our SGA Class Representatives!
Analyzing Character Traits
We have been reading a story titled My Diary From Here to There. Throughout our reading we have been making decisions about the various character traits of the main character, Amada. Students created drafts of stick figures, analyzing physical details that the author used (example: her hair is blowing in the wind) and matched that up to a larger version of a body. Students traced one person in their group and made a giant character where they were able to collaborate about the physical attitubutes and traits provided by the author. We also determined the traits of the character and wrote them around the body!
Non-Fiction Text Features
Understanding the various features within non-fiction text can help boost students' comprehension of the information. We analyzed the different features and in pairs, students worked to write a definition of the feature and show an example that they found in a non-fiction text. We put them all together and made a text features "quilt"!
Plink-O Friday!
Students earn tickets for various rewards throughout the week! They save the tickets and hope to have their ticket number drawn during our Fun Friday activities. Here are some pictures of this Fun Friday's activity! Ask your child to tell you what they have learned with their Ball Fall of Fortune tickets!
Which weighs more: a WHOLE cookie or a CRUMBLED cookie?
September 4, 2014
Our first science experiment of the year involved designing, hypothesizing, conducting and analyzing the results of an experiment involving the weights of cookies.
Students posed the question about cookies and then proceeded to make a justified hypothesis for the question. We went through the entire scientific process as we conducted the experiment as a class. In order to provide further independent practice, the students each individually conducted the experiment with their own cookie. We discussed how scientists conduct experiments and analyze their results before sharing their information with others.
This experiment was great and the students really enjoyed having a hands-on activity to take them through the scientific method!
Be sure to ask your child which weighs more - a whole cookie or a crumbled cookie!
